The name comes from a praise by the Sendai clan lord.

About the Gyouzan-ryu Yamaguchi-ha Kakinaizawa Shishi-odori (deer dance)

Two of the three schools of Shishi-odori, the Gyozan-ryu and the Kanetsu-ryu were transmitted to the Kesen region. Many of the dance troupes belong to the Gyouzan-ryu which is related to the Date family. The Yamaguchi lineage's Master is Kizaemon Yamaguchi of Oohara town, Higashi-iwai county.

It is said that the lord praising he dance qualifying it as "gyouzan (magnificent)" have given the name to the school.
